History of Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is essentially the most romantic day of the year, but have you ever wondered why an entire day was dedicated to telling our loved ones how we feel? After all, you should be able to show your appreciation for someone every day of the year! Well, the truth is that Valentine’s Day wasn’t necessarily always about sending Valentine’s flowers, exchanging gifts and enjoying some of the sweetest treats. The History of Valentines Day – here’s how it really all began.

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate romance and love. But the origins of this festival of candy and cupids are actually dark, bloody.

The history of Valentines Day – and the story of its patron saint is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.

Valentine's Day

There are numerous martyrdom stories associated with various Valentines connected to February 14, including a written account of Saint Valentine of Rome’s imprisonment for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge, and he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell before his execution. The Feast of Saint Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14 in honour of the Christian martyr, Saint Valentine of Rome, who died on that date in AD 269.

Although not a public holiday in any country, Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church. Many parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day on July 6 and July 30, the former date in honor of Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna.

The popular belief about the History of Valentines Day is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD. It’s thought that as part of the celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They’d be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they’d get married.
